Sponsoring a child through World Shine UK

Impacting the community

Picture
By sponsoring a child or young person you can make a real difference, not just to one child, but to the community in which that child lives. Supporting a student in a Christian school like WSF  Nursery & Primary School develops not only intellectual ability, but character, morality and an ethos of service.

There are over a hundred children; orphans, children of single parents, or living in difficult domestic circumstances; who are already sponsored students at theWSF  Nursery & Primary School. Many more await sponsors.

Some children have been able to return to the school because a sponsor has become available. Others have not been so fortunate and have been withdrawn from school to work as domestic servants or help in the fields.

Sponsorship provides a child with more than an education. By providing the opportunity to acquire the education and skills needed to start changing their own lives you are giving that child the key to open the door out of poverty for themselves, their families and their community. You are also putting them in touch with the life-changing message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You can provide hope…

Children are selected by the school and matched to a sponsor through World Shine UK's Sponsorship Coordinator. Sponsors receive regular reports on the progress of their sponsored child or young person. The children’s family circumstances are monitored by the school's Child Development Worker and regular reports of their progress are sent to their sponsors. The children are encouraged to send letters or drawings. Sponsors may wish to mark birthdays and Christmas by sending letters, gifts and photographs.

As well as individuals and families, schools, Sunday schools, youth organisations and church groups will find sponsorship to be a rewarding experience as they share in the struggles and aspirations of those living in a culture very different from their own.

World Shine UK has a dedicated Sponsorship Coordinator who facilitates the link between the child and sponsor.

World Shine Foundation Primary & Nursery School is located in Rwentobo, Uganda where it seeks to raise education standards in a majority Muslim area that is poorly served by schools. Rwentobo is strategically placed on the main Kampala to Rwanda highway in an area of great natural beauty with the Kigezi hills in the background. The population is poor, predominantly day labourers, many having fled over the border to escape the Rwandan genocide and remained. Family life is affected by the social problems associated with poverty. The community traditionally has not sent many girls to school. The local community has responded with enthusiasm to the school project from its inception.

The school now has over 600 pupils in Nursery and Primary. There are plans to develop Secondary provision in the near future with the building of dormitory accommodation being the first phase. The school is regulated by the Ugandan government which sets minimum standards and a salary structure for teachers.

As in most schools, fees cover teachers’ salaries, administrative costs, teaching materials etc. Very importantly, children are provided with two meals a day to meet nutritional needs and improve concentration.

The school has recently added boarding accommodation for pupils who have to travel too far to reach the school or have unstable domestic situations and this increases the fees for these children.
